"Zach Randolph sat near the Grizzlies practice court Tuesday afternoon wearing ice bags on both knees and a smile on his face.
The 6-9 All-Star power forward was his usual jovial self. Off the floor, the spirit of a possible contract extension for Randolph is lukewarm at best.
The Grizzlies have not yet offered Randolph a deal. Therefore, no discussions have taken place about securing his future in Memphis.
The 29-year-old enters tonight's game against Dallas after amassing 23 points and 20 rebounds Monday in a 109-99 win over Phoenix. Randolph is averaging 18.3 points and 15 rebounds (with three double-doubles) in three games after missing the previous four contests because of a bruised tailbone.
He is in the final year of a deal that pays him $17.3 million this season. Randolph would become an unrestricted free agent next summer if no deal is reached. That means he could leave without the Griz having the ability to match any offers he'd receive.
"We're staying in touch but there's nothing new to report," Griz general manager Chris Wallace said when asked if there was any progress with Randolph's contract situation.
However, an SI.com article Tuesday cited an NBA source in saying Randolph is frustrated about not receiving an offer. The report implied that Randolph wanted out of Memphis with Detroit as a preferred destination.
SI.com wrote: "If the Grizzlies are looking to deal (Randolph), multiple sources say Randolph's preferred destination is Detroit, where he would fill the gaping hole in the Pistons' frontcourt."
Raymond Brothers, Randolph's agent, confirmed that he has had no formal contract talks with the Griz but refuted SI.com's assertions."
