"Let's count up all of Steph Curry's assists for the Warriors' in Tuesday night's 115-93 loss to the visiting Boston Celtics.
Ready, set, go: His first assist came on the Warriors' opening basket, his second came on their next field goal and then ...
That's it. Two assists. Total. That's sad, and that epitomizes the wobbly state of the Warriors, whose modest three-game win streak ended.
Curry should have many more assists. Maybe 10 more. But not with this bunch of lackadaisical and lower-tier teammates, too many of whom looked glum, disinterested and incapable of making an open shot in their first game back from the All-Star break.
The Celtics have so many weapons you can't help but wonder what Curry - or Monta Ellis, the Warriors' other premier player - would be capable of on a more talented team.
Asked if the Curry-Ellis backcourt works or if the Warriors need a bigger shooting guard, Celtics veteran guard Ray Allen said: "It depends who else is on the squad. Those guys are more than capable."
Who else will the Warriors someday get to bolster Curry and Ellis? It is a question that won't be answered by Thursday's trade deadline. But it - the glaring need for a big man inside - eventually will be addressed in the draft or with a trade.
Looking at Tuesday night positively, Curry again showed the encouraging upside that keeps him as a franchise, no-trade cog."
