Wainwright 'excited' about his consolation prize

"The Philadelphia Phillies' Roy Halladay has earned unanimous selection as the National League's Cy Young Award winner, the Baseball Writers Association of America announced Tuesday afternoon.

The Cardinals' Adam Wainwright received a nice consolation prize.

A year after receiving the most first-place votes en route to a controversial third-place finish, Wainwright polled second among ballots submitted by 32 scribes. The finish holds additional significance since it automatically vests Wainwright's two-year option for 2012-13. The years are worth a combined $21 million. Wainwright also receives a $100,000 bonus for today's finish.

The only way the Cardinals can void the two-year option is if Wainwright finishes next season on thte disabled list with an arm-related injury.

"I am really excited to be a St. Louis Cardinal for three more years," Wainwright said shortly after this afternoon's announcement. "I hope to one day finish my career in St. Louis, so three more years is obviously something I can get excited about."

Halladay becomes the fifth pitcher to win the award in both leagues as he won the AL award with the 2003 Toronto Blue Jays. He finished the regular season 21-10 with a 2.44 ERA while leading the NL with 250 2/3 innings pitched and a ratio of 7.3 strikeouts for every walk issued.

Wainwright improved on his 2009 season by going 20-11 with a 2.42 ERA and a 1.051 WHIP while striking out 3.8 strikeouts for every walk issued. His efficiency improved enough over a 19-win 2009 campaign that he faced 60 fewer hitters this year while pitching only 2 2/3 fewer innings than the previous season.

The Colorado Rockies' Ubaldo Jimenez finished third in the vote, followed by the Atlanta Braves' Tim Hudson.

Wainwright, admittedly stunned by last year's vote that awarded the Cy Young to the San Francisco Giants' Tim Lincecum following a 15-win season, fully endorsed today's announcement. Holliday, Wainwright and Jimenez were the only pitchers named on all ballots."
