"Vince Young expects to be a star in the NFL.
He would like to be on the field, leading his team to touchdowns and winning football games.
In short, he wants to do what he has always done: be VY.
For now, though, VY being VY has been put on hold while Vince learns a new system.
Released by the Tennessee Titans despite much on-the-field success in his five-year career, Young, 28, is slated to be the backup to the Eagles' Michael Vick on one of the most talked about teams in the NFL.
It isn't the position a two-time Pro Bowler with a 30-17 record as a starter expected to be in entering his sixth year in the league. But if Young wants to be the starting quarterback on a team that has a chance to go to a Super Bowl, he must master this position.
Though he shouldn't have had to take this detour to get a second chance, this route could prove to be the best for the former Madison and University of Texas star. Young says he isn't starting over; he is taking the next step.
Perhaps Young will take steps in Philadelphia he should have taken in Nashville. Perhaps there are steps he might take here that he couldn't in Nashville. Too much history. Too many mistakes. (His and the team's.)
"It's a clean slate here," Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said. "I told him the smartest choice he ever made was coming here."
Mornhinweg, who from the time he was a toddler until he was 10 lived just a few miles from where Young grew up on the south side of Houston, almost salivates (and it's not just the chew) when he talks about Young's talent."
