Volquez sent to minors to get his mind right

"When word trickled out that the Reds had called up Todd Frazier, it was easy to conclude that a shakeup was about to take place.

When all the moves were finally announced, it was clear that the Reds were merely trying to shake Edinson Volquez back into being a reliable pitcher.

Volquez is being sent to the minors to get straightened out. The other moves were all related to that. Volquez and reliever Jordan Smith were sent out to make room for left-hander Matt Maloney and infielder/outfielder Frazier.

Frazier's stay could be short. The Reds will probably make another move Friday to bring up a pitcher to take Volquez's turn in the rotation. Either Mike Leake or Chad Reineke will get that start. Dontrelle Willis went on the disabled list Monday with a strained groin.

So, again, all of the moves were Volquez-related. Volquez was 3-2 with a 6.35 ERA in 10 starts. He allowed seven runs in 2 2/3 innings Sunday in a 12-4 loss to surprising Cleveland.

"He wasn't satisfied," Baker said. "He's going to go down – hopefully not very long before he gets it together. We anticipated he'll be back in a short period of the time with quality, the Volquez we know.

"We need some length (endurance) in our bullpen. That's why we called up Maloney. We figured Volqy won't be able to pitch for a few days. We figured we could use another bat off the bench, especially this series in Philly. That's why we brought up Frazier."

Frazier was hitting .293 with 11 home runs and 33 RBI for Triple-A Louisville.

"You want to call up guys who are doing well," Baker said. "(Juan) Francisco just got sent out, so he couldn't be called back for 10 days. Hopefully, (Frazier) can give us a shot in the arm.""
