Volquez' next rehab start set for Thursday

" Right-hander Edinson Volquez could rejoin the Reds in about a month, if things go as planned.

Volquez is rehabilitating from Tommy John elbow surgery Aug. 3. Volquez threw 44 pitches in a three-inning scoreless stint Saturday for Single-A Lynchburg, and will start again Thursday for Lynchburg.

Volquez told a Lynchburg ABC-TV affiliate that he expects to make two starts in High A, two in Double-A and two in Triple-A before rejoining the Reds in about a month.

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said that is the basic plan, based on the next 30 days.

"Right now it's a matter of getting his pitch count up toward 100," Jocketty said. "We want him to do that two or three times before he comes back up here."

Jocketty said it is undetermined if Volquez will start or relieve when he first rejoins the Reds. Long-term, Volquez will again be a starter. He was an All-Star in 2008.

Volquez consistently reached 92-95 mph with his fastball and peaked at 96 on Saturday, according to the ABC-TV affiliate that covered the game.

In April, Major League Baseball suspended Volquez for 50 games after Volquez tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. The suspension is due to end Monday.

BAILEY UPDATE: Jocketty said it may be next week before right-hander Homer Bailey throws again.

Bailey has been shut down after having a setback with inflammation in his right shoulder.

"We'll probably keep him from throwing for maybe a week," Jocketty said. "Then it might take two of three weeks before he's ready to pitch for us. There's really no timetable."

Bailey experienced new soreness in the days after a rehab start last Tuesday for Triple-A Louisville.

Bailey is taking anti-inflammatory medicine while he rehabs with Reds trainers, Jocketty said.

Bailey had an ice pack strapped to his shoulder Sunday, as he did a pre-game interview.

"Like I've said, it's nothing really alarming," Bailey said. "Just be patient right now and see what we can do.""
