If Virginia Tech is to bounce back from a couple disappointing seasons by Hokie standards, it'll do it behind a junior transfer quarterback.

Coach Frank Beamer announced Saturday that Texas Tech graduate Michael Brewer beat out fifth-year senior Mark Leal for the starting job after a lengthy competition.

"Both of the guys gave great effort and played very well in preseason, making it a very difficult choice," Beamer said. "It was a very close race and we’re proud of both of them."

Appearing in 13 games over two seasons with the Red Raiders, Brewer threw for 440 yards and five touchdowns.
