"It appears the Mavericks are close to forming a reunion of the Vince Carter-Jason Kidd tag team.

In the wake of losing Tyson Chandler and Caron Butler, the Mavericks are in need of rotation depth and Carter -- waived by the Phoenix Suns on Friday -- would seem to fit the bill perfectly.

A source said the talks have gotten serious and that the man they used to call Vinsanity could be on his way to the Mavericks. Carter was scheduled to make $18 million this season, but when the Suns waived him, it reduced their financial obligation to $4 million.

This would not be an amnesty provision, meaning teams under the salary cap do not get first crack at Carter.

Rather, the Mavericks would be able to offer Carter a contract up to the mid-level exception, about $5 million. It was not known whether the Mavericks were offering the full MLE."
