Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said Friday there is no preconceived notions that the team's eighth overall pick in the NFL draft has to be a quarterback.

"It's not going to be a forced issue," Spielman said in a meeting with reporters before next week's NFL Scouting Combine.

Spielman said the Vikings will speak with the agent of quarterback Matt Cassel at the combine. Cassel is on the path to becoming a free agent. Spielman added that Christian Ponder will be with the team.

He said questions about quarterback show they don't have the position "solidified."

Quarterbacks are among the more than 300 prospects will participate in the combine is Feb. 22-25 in Indianapolis.

The Vikings have eight picks in the NFL draft, which begins May 8, including four in the top 100 picks.
