"A few players have come and gone during last week's free agency frenzy, but enough pieces remain on the Vikings roster to avoid the R-word entering today's start of training camp.
Rebuilding.
Or at least that's the plan after trading for 34-year-old quarterback Donovan McNabb and remaining relatively conservative on the open market.
Though this week's player evaluations could prompt more movement, the front office seems intent on making a few minor moves to provide depth while negotiating with linebacker Chad Greenway and running back Adrian Peterson on long-term extensions.
The Vikings reported to Minnesota State University on Sunday with 14 of last season's starters and an open mind after crumbling under last season's hype on the way to a 6-10 finish.
"We obviously were humbled," Greenway said. "It's going to be great for us to come back here and go to work."
The team's roster ballooned to 89 players Sunday after securing all 10 rookies and announcing the signing of eight free agents, including veteran offensive tackle Scott Kooistra.
Peterson showed up to camp at Minnesota State University just before 4 p.m. He was unavailable for comment, but his presence quelled speculation about a potential holdout as he enters the last season of his rookie contract, worth $10.72 million in 2011.
The Vikings have made clear Greenway will get an extension before Peterson, likely because Greenway's deal is easier (and less expensive) to execute.
Greenway acknowledged Sunday that both sides have "ongoing negotiations," and he wants to stay in Minnesota for the long term.
Greenway is due $10.1 million this season under the franchise tag, a move he said flatters him.
Coach Leslie Frazier said talk of a contract extension has not entered his recent conversations with Peterson, but the Vikings have "already broached his group about what we want to do." "
