Vikings have holes to fill but receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh not in mix

"Three days before the season opener at New Orleans, the Vikings are still looking to add depth at cornerback, wide receiver and possibly the offensive line.

At least one high-profile receiver probably won't be coming to the Twin Cities.

Coach Brad Childress on Sunday quieted speculation that former Pro Bowler T.J. Houshmandzadeh, released by Seattle last week, was headed to Minnesota.

The Vikings are not interested "right now," Childress said.

"I'd probably be more prone to seeing if we can find a younger guy or somebody that's been around in a West Coast offense," he said.

The Vikings have four healthy wide receivers, three healthy cornerbacks and seven healthy linemen who survived Saturday's 53-man roster reduction. Starting center John Sullivan (calf injury) returned to practice Sunday, but he might not be ready for Thursday night's game at New Orleans.

Don't be surprised if Javon Walker returns after being cut Saturday.

Both Childress and Brett Favre said Sunday that Walker's return is a possibility after catching six passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns in two exhibition games. Walker's cut could have been a financial move because his salary would have been guaranteed if he were on the Week 1 roster.

Childress said that door might open "at a point in time" after having a positive conversation with Walker on Saturday night, but he didn't provide specifics.

"He's system-friendly and, obviously, he knows the quarterback a little bit," Childress said.

Walker, who is staying loose in case he gets a callback, has Favre in his corner. Walker was a Pro Bowl receiver in 2004 as Favre's receiver in Green Bay, and though Favre criticized Walker for his contract holdout before the 2005 season, the two have patched things up. "
