Vernon Davis' winning catch ranks among 49ers' all-time great grabs

"You have to climb monumentally high to stake a place for yourself on the 49ers' playoff mountaintop, and Vernon Davis went there Saturday.

Man oh man did he go there.

He went as high as you can go, into rare and regal air, to the summit of all great 49ers touchdown-catch moments, and there is no franchise that has a comparable litany.

Davis came, he saw, he caught, he cried, he conquered the New Orleans Saints.

Now, after this thundering, mind-blowing 36-32 divisional-round victory at Candlestick, Davis joins Dwight Clark, John Taylor, Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens in 49ers Reception Valhalla.

"I know there was 'The Catch' -- I don't know what you're going to call this one," coach Jim

Harbaugh said of Davis' 14-yard catch to win this epic game with nine seconds left.

Now, there's this one. There is definitely this one, a tear-stained climax and encapsulation of this team, this season, and most certainly this news-making, play-making tight end.

Every memorable 49ers playoff team has produced its own glorious touchdown play, and this season's squad has Davis, in the last seconds, producing victory.

Where does Davis' moment fit in the pantheon?

"The Catch," of course, was Clark's game-winner from Joe Montana in January 1982, the origin point of all 49ers greatness."
