Chase Utley hasn’t appeared in a game since May 20 because of a strained right oblique muscle, and he still hasn’t begun to swing a bat. According to Utley, the recovery from the injury has been slow, but he hasn’t placed a timetable on when he will return.

“It’s still going to be a fairly slow process of trying to come back,” Utley said before Thursday’s series finale against the Red Sox. “As soon as I’m ready, I’ll be out there.”

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Utley’s injury likely will keep him out until mid-June. However, given the nature of the injury and Utley’s history with pulled muscles, a return is even more unpredictable. Though Utley has torn the labrum in his hip, broken a hand and battled a chronic knee condition for the past couple of seasons, he says he had never pulled a muscle.
