The Southern Miss basketball team received a slight bump in voting for the AP Top 25 on Monday, but it still has work to do if it's going to make it into the national rankings.

USM held steady with 25 points in the USA Today Coaches Poll, coming in at 29th overall for the second week in the row.

In the AP poll, the Golden Eagles received six votes, five more than last week, to come in at 31st overall.

Southern Miss has not been ranked since the end of the 1990-91 campaign when it finished ranked 25th after climbing as high as ninth in the nation that season.

The Golden Eagles are 21-3 and 8-1 -- the best start to a season since the program made the leap to the Division I level before the 1972-73 campaign.

USM, which is tied with UTEP for first place in Conference USA, is also widely included in NCAA Tournament projections.
