David Moyes is considering stepping up his interest in Marouane Fellaini if Barcelona cannot be convinced to sell Cesc Fabregas.

The United manager is increasingly having to consider alternative targets as the Spanish giants remain firm in their stances that Fabregas is not for sale.

Moyes still hopes a deal can be reached for the former Arsenal captain – despite having bids of around £26m and £30m rejected. Fabregas returned for pre-season training yesterday with Barcelona convinced he wants to remain at the Nou Camp.

United are expected to return with a third bid – but another rejection will leave Moyes having to look elsewhere.

Fellaini has been among his list of targets this summer but the Premier League champions are still to firm up their interest.

Real Madrid’s Luka Modric could also re-enter Moyes’ thoughts as he remains determined to strengthen his midfield.

Fabregas is still his top target and there was a belief the Spanish international would welcome a move to Old Trafford.

But United have so far been rebuffed in their attempts to bring him back to the Premier League and Moyes is eager to make his first marquee signing since taking over at the club. He has already missed out on Barca prospect Thiago Alcantara and is becoming increasingly frustrated in his pursuit of Fabregas.
