Manager Manny Acta confirmed the identity not only of the Indians' No. 1 starter but also the second man in the rotation. "Justin Masterson is No. 1 and Ubaldo Jimenez is No. 2," he said Friday, after talking to both pitchers.

Despite his struggles last year with the Colorado Rockies then the Tribe, Jimenez might have had reason to think he would start on Opening Day rather than Masterson.

"I talked to Ubaldo," Acta said. "He clearly understands. Last year he did not have the typical year for him."

Jimenez's combined record in 2011 was 10-13 with a 4.68 ERA.

Two other starters already have spots in the rotation locked up: Josh Tomlin and Derek Lowe. The competitors for the fifth position will be Kevin Slowey, David Huff, Jeanmar Gomez and Zach McAllister.

Despite going 0-8 with a 6.67 ERA last year, Slowey has to be considered the favorite, based on his track record. In the four seasons before 2011, he compiled a 39-21 record and 4.41 ERA for the Minnesota Twins.
