Rod Marinelli has set a high standard for his defensive linemen. He’s looking for them all to have career years.

Is the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator asking for a lot? Absolutely.

But players like third-year linemen Tyrone Crawford think this current front is getting prepared to surprise the league.

“I see it when we’re out there,” Crawford said Tuesday during the team’s annual golf outing in Grapevine. “I see it when we bond. What we talk about as a defense, I’m just getting that feeling right now that we’re going to have a great year. I don’t know, I just have a feeling.

“With the guys that we have and the hunger that’s within everybody right now, it’s amazing. I’m crazy excited.”

But how could this group be better? Last year’s defense was one of the worst in franchise history and they are now without seven-time Pro Bowler DeMarcus Ware and the team’s sack leader from a year ago, Jason Hatcher.

The Cowboys had 34 sacks in 2013. Ware and Hatcher were responsible for half of them. Dallas had 175 quarterback hurries. Ware and Hatcher totaled 67.
