"So who's ready for the 2012 NFL draft? Well, at least two national sports writers are, as evidenced by their mock drafts, just 51 weeks away from the real thing. Sports Illustrated's Andrew Perloff and Foxsports.com's Peter Schrager both published how they think things will pan out next year. We doubt they conferred with each other beforehand, but both guys have the Lions taking the same player at different spots in the first round. Perloff has Detroit 12th in Round 1 -- obviously outside of the upcoming season's playoffs -- and taking South Carolina cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Perloff: "The Lions need to bolster their secondary and will take the highest rated cornerback at this spot. Gilmore still has something to prove, but could develop into a shutdown guy." Schrager also has the Lions taking Gilmore, but with the 20th pick in the first round. "With rookies Nick Fairley, Titus Young and Mikel Leshoure all playing major roles in '11, the Lions focus on defensive back in 2012, scooping up Gilmore, the physical 6-2, 195-pound cover corner out of South Carolina. As a freshman, Gilmore started every game in 2009, and he got better in 2010. Look for an All-America campaign in 2011," Schrager writes. Both writers have only one local college player in their first round: Michigan State defensive lineman Jerel Worthy. Perloff has the Spartan going 13th to the Dolphins, but Schrager thinks Worthy is, well, worthy, of the fifth overall pick by the Broncos."
