"Grady Sizemore returned to Cleveland on Monday on the disabled list for the third time this season and expecting the worst in terms of the injury to his right knee.
GM Chris Antonetti said the loss of Sizemore will not increase the urgency he feels to try and make a deal to improve the Indians' offense.
"It's really no different," said Antonetti. "We continue to explore ways to improve the team. We're exploring all means possible. There's only so much you can do.
"It takes two parties to make a trade. You have to agree on the value of the players involved and align in the timing regarding such a deal."
The deadline for making a deal without waivers is July 31. Trades can still be made until Aug. 31, but waivers are needed on all players traded.
Antonetti has been looking for right-handed hitting outfielder and a starting pitcher. Asked if the team's tenuous hold on first place in the AL Central, combined with Sizemore's injury, makes them vulnerable to giving up too much to rent a player for 2 1/2 months, Antonetti said, "My job is to make sure that doesn't happen."
One thing is clear, young players such as Jason Kipnis and Lonnie Chisenhall will not be traded for a free-agent rental. Jon Heyman of SI.com is reporting that the Indians have interest in NL right-hander Aaron Harang of the Padres and Hiroki Kuroda of the Dodgers. The Indians had interest in Harang during the off-season. "
