Tressel might factor into Colts' plans

"Jim Tressel's brief and ancillary role with the Indianapolis Colts might evolve into something more substantial.

Team owner Jim Irsay's plane flew Friday morning to Sarasota, Fla., where Tressel owns a home, and returned to Indianapolis later in the day. Multiple sources have said they expect the former Ohio State coach to interview for the Colts' coaching position.

WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio, reported the Colts and Tressel met Friday for a second time to discuss the team's opening. Coach Jim Caldwell was fired Tuesday.

The Colts have interviewed New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr., and The Tennessean reported Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray was interviewed Friday.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer also has been identified as a candidate. NFL.com, citing league sources, reported the Colts want to speak with former Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress, who is one of the coaches for today's East-West Shrine Game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Also, Irsay said he plans to use the first overall pick in the April NFL draft on a quarterback whether or not Peyton Manning is healthy. The owner believes it would be hard to pass up Stanford's Andrew Luck or Baylor's Robert Griffin III."
