" Trent Edwards knows he's not the most popular guy among Bills fans.
After all, the fourth-year Buffalo quarterback did attend Stanford, and while his physical skills have certainly come under fire during his time with the Bills, no one has ever questioned his intelligence.
"There's obviously doubters out there," Edwards said Tuesday morning on the second day of the Bills' spring practice sessions.
Oh yes, there are doubters all right, and almost all of them might pull out whatever hair they have left on their heads if it turns out that Edwards is going to be the Bills' starting quarterback this year.
Bills fans grew tired of Edwards during a horrific 2009 season when not only did he fail to show improvement, he slid backward and lost his starting job to career backup Ryan Fitzpatrick.
The ticket-buying public is more than ready to turn the page on Edwards and the hope is that the Bills can either acquire Donovan McNabb in a trade — which seems unlikely — or select their next quarterback in the NFL draft April 22. New coach Chan Gailey is not ready to divulge his plans for the position, only that one will be added to the roster soon.
"We just started talking about terminology and implementation of what we're trying to do," Gailey said of his initial meeting with Edwards, Fitzpatrick and Brian Brohm. "I haven't sat down and talked to (the QBs) about the situation. I haven't addressed that yet."
Gailey did say, though, "We pursue everything. If you don't look at everything, you're wrong as an organization."
Edwards knows what's going on.
He hears the McNabb rumors; he knows the Bills had Tim Tebow in for a visit on Monday, and that Colt McCoy will work out here sometime in April; he knows the fans and media are down on him; and he knows the starting job is only his if he can win it.
"That's part of the territory," the 26-year-old said. "I wouldn't expect them to name anyone right now. There's no reason. They have no allegiance to anyone here, I wasn't drafted by this staff. So I have a clean slate just like anyone they would bring in here.""
