Elton Brand walked out of the Sixers' locker room following Friday night's 105-83 victory over the Golden State Warriors with a ping pong ball-sized welt on his forehead. Call it a badge of honor from the 33-minutes and 14-points, 14-rebounds effort in the game.

Actually, given the nicks, strains, sprains and scrapes Brand has endured this season, routine swelling on his face shouldn't be a surprise. After all, it's nothing more than the residual part of a man practicing a lost art in the modern NBA. In a sense, Brand's forehead, hands, thumb and legs are more cautionary tale for some and a warning for others.

If you play basketball like Elton Brand, you better have a lot of courage. It may leave a mark.
