Trade rumors involving Pistons' Tayshaun Prince might be overblown

"Many Detroit Pistons fans want to see Tayshaun Prince shipped out of town as soon as possible. But the Pistons might have some very good reasons for being patient.

After all, what makes Prince such a valuable target for potential trade partners -- his expiring contract -- is just as valuable to the Pistons.

Sorting through trade rumors in search of some truth can be difficult. Some rumors start because an NBA writer or broadcaster says "a trade of so-and-so for so-and-so would make sense."

General managers sometimes plant fake rumors with local writers to try to create a market for their own players in potential trades with other teams.

Occasionally -- not often, but sometimes -- a trade rumor is even based in fact. (Surprising, but it does happen.)

So, how can Pistons fans know whether a rumor involving Prince might be based in reality? There are a few ways.

First, it seems unlikely that the Pistons would trade Prince for another player with an expiring contract unless he is someone they would consider signing long-term next summer. There is little reason to trade one short-timer for another.

So the Pistons are more likely to trade Prince for a player who still has some years on his contract, right?

Not necessarily. The Pistons will set the bar high for that type of player as well. And they should."
