Tottenham are preparing to step up their interest in Brazilian teenager Neilton after the player's agent confirmed that the 19-year-old was no nearer to signing a new contract at Santos.

The prodigious winger's current contract expires in the summer and after rejecting a new deal with Santos at the start of October, Neilton's agent Roberto de Almeida has revealed the two parties still have some way to go to reach an agreement.

According to Brazilian website Sambafoot, who spoke to de Almeida, Santos have offered £7,000 a month with Neilton holding out for £20,000 a month.

The website claims that the disparity between the two proposals has alerted European clubs to the possibility of signing Neilton cheaply in January, or getting the youngster to sign a pre-contract agreement that would see him move on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Tottenham are thought to have had a £7m bid for Neilton - who has been dubbed the new Neymar - rejected over the summer, but reports suggest that Spanish side Sevilla think a bid of £600,000 may be enough to prise the player away in January.

Despite the issues, Neílton has claimed he wants to stay at Santos.
