Tottenham hope Gareth Bale will sign a new contract when he returns to training this week, reports the Daily Mirror.

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas and the club’s new sporting director Franco Baldini will lead the attempt to persuade Bale to commit his future to the north London outfit for one more season.

If the Welsh forward agrees to extend his deal, he will become the highest earner in the club’s history on £170,000-a-week.

Real Madrid have been strongly linked with a move for the 23-year-old, who scored 21 league goals and was named treble player of the year in a stunning campaign for Spurs last season.
