The question wasn't whether Todd Helton would undergo successful surgery on his left hip, but whether doctors would find additional damage beyond the labrum.

Rockies trainer Keith Dugger said there were no surprises. Helton elected to have the season-ending procedure to provide ample time to be ready for spring training. He talked with a friend who had the same surgery to get a better read on the recovery time. Helton, who turns 39 on Aug. 20, has said he plans to play next season, when he will make $5 million in the last year of his contract. But how his leg responds and his future role with the team will also likely figure into his decision.
