Titans trying to solve QB, head coach controversy

"At least three times during his tenure as coach of the Houston Oilers, Jerry Glanville went to Bud Adams with a problem that needed sorting out.

Some players had become distractions, acting like they were bigger than the team. Glanville made a case to Adams, and said Jeff Fisher should do the same as the Titans owner decides whether to keep the coach or quarterback Vince Young.

"I don't know the scope of the problems there, but I know what Jeff needs to say to Bud: Can one person be bigger than the organization? If he can, then how big is the team and the organization?'' Glanville said Tuesday.

"That's what I always told Bud, and when I'd say that to him, he'd sit up in that chair of his, and that chair would swivel around and I'd see the back of his head. Then he'd swivel back and say, 'Let's get that (guy) out of here.'

"Bud knows you can't let a player be bigger than your team; he'll kill your team if you do. And he never once let me down.''

Glanville, who coached the Oilers from 1985-89, wouldn't reveal the players in question, but it's safe to say none carried the same weight that Young does with Adams.

The owner handpicked the Houston native in the 2006 draft and has stayed loyal to him through highs including a 30-17 record and lows including poor reactions to adversity."
