"Randy was hardly a dandy in his first game with the Titans, who turned in a complete dud.
And after the Dolphins beat the Titans 29-17 on Sunday at Sun Life Stadium, it was difficult to determine what was more disappointing: Tennessee struggling in its second straight defeat or the underwhelming debut of Randy Moss.
In his brief comments, Moss could have been speaking for the entire team — at least when he concluded that he played poorly.
"It was actually a bad game for me,'' said the 13th-year pro, who had one catch for 26 yards. "I think I just tried to do as much hustling as I could. I just tried to stay within the offense. I felt comfortable out there, but I don't think I had a very good overall game. I think that my blocking really wasn't that good, where I wanted it to be. I'll just go back to the drawing board and come back again next week.''
The Titans (5-4) slipped a game behind the Colts (6-3) in the AFC South. They also saw quarterback Kerry Collins, who started in place of injured Vince Young, suffer a calf injury late in the first half. He hobbled out of the locker room and is scheduled for an MRI today.
Young started the second half and threw the only pass caught by Moss, who was wide open against a zone defense as the Dolphins nursed a lead with 4:42 to play.
Collins and Young targeted Moss only four times on 38 pass plays. Claimed off waivers last week after stints with the Patriots and Vikings, the future Hall of Famer entered the game as the center of attention but finished it almost as an afterthought.
"It was frustrating,'' Collins said. "We certainly had plays in the game plan to try and get him the ball, but it just didn't work out.''
"We were trying, yeah,'' Coach Jeff Fisher said.
Reporters and cameramen surrounded Moss' locker like the Dolphins had surrounded him on the field most of the day. He initially indicated he would not address the media.
"I'm talking once a week and I've already talked this week. Were you there? I talked Wednesday,'' Moss said with an irritated smile. "Conversation over.''"
