"When the Titans selected linebackers with two of their first four draft picks last week, it was easy to believe that middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch's days with the team might be numbered.
But during a conference call Friday in which General Manager Mike Reinfeldt and Coach Mike Munchak answered questions from season ticket-holders, Reinfeldt said the Titans want Tulloch back next season.
It's unclear at this point whether Tulloch will be an unrestricted free agent or a restricted free agent when the lockout ends, but the Titans have tendered an offer to him in case it's the latter.
"We'd very much like him back," Reinfeldt said of Tulloch, who led the Titans in tackles the past two seasons. "We drafted him. We kind of trained him up. He fits in well. He's a good player. We'd welcome him back.
"I think what we tried to do (in the draft) at the linebacker position and in all the positions is really create as much competition as possible: Get as many good football players as you can at each spot. (But) Stephen Tulloch is a good football player and we want him back."
Here are some other points Munchak and Reinfeldt made during the teleconference with fans:
Reinfeldt on who the Titans might add as a veteran quarterback: "It might be a guy we might like for two or three years. Because of the free agency, I can't mention those guys by name, but Kerry Collins would be in that mix and there's probably either three or four other guys that are worth talking about, either through trade or free agency."
Reinfeldt on the future of second-year quarterback Rusty Smith: "He's still got all the tools. I think he's a young man that has a chance to play in the league for a number of years. He might not be a starter, but he could be a pretty darn good backup for a while. He's got all the things you look for: the strong arm, the good size and he's got a good touch, a quick release."
Munchak on whether seldom-used wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins might see more action this year: "We're excited about Hawkins. We think he's got a great opportunity to provide a lot of competition at that position. … When you have new coaches and a new system, he'll get a nice fresh look this year. I know (offensive coordinator) Chris Palmer is pretty excited about him, so I think he may have the opportunity this year to really get on the field a little bit more."
Munchak on how the Titans will score more points this season: "It's just about finishing drives with seven points instead of three. I think those are some of the things over the years that have hurt us a little bit — be a little more creative in the red zone and finish drives when we do get down there."
Munchak on the Titans using Marc Mariani more at slot wide receiver, since he will likely have less opportunity to return kicks under new NFL rules: "I think we will. Chris Palmer is really excited about him and the way he may help us in that way, kind of the way (Derrick )Mason did back early in his career when he was our main returner and worked in the receiver area."
Reinfeldt on free agent wide receiver Randy Moss: "I honestly don't think we'll try to re-sign him. We've got some young guys we like and I think at this point in his career he will probably go elsewhere.""
