Tim Wakefield is the latest Red Sox player to join back up with the team after his playing days are over, joining the likes of Jason Varitek and Pedro Martinez among the club’s recent hires. Wakefield is returning to the Red Sox as an honorary chairman of the Red Sox Foundation and as a special assignment instructor with baseball operations, according to a statement by the team Friday. “With the foundation,” the statement reads, “Wakefield will bring his vast experience to a variety of areas, including fundraising events, community service days and the personal visits that characterized his community commitment throughout his career.
