"Fans clamoring for the call-up of spring-training sensation Andy Dirks got their wish this afternoon. The Detroit Tigers announced they would bring up the hot-hitting outfielder from Triple-A Toledo to replace Magglio Ordonez, who's headed to the 15-day disabled list. Ordonez is recovering from ankle surgery last year and told club officials his ankle is weak. "Maggilo came to me (Thursday) and said he wasn't able to push off (of it) the way he would like," said Kevin Rand, the Tigers' head trainer. "He's been feeling the effects of his ankle off and on during the season. Some days feel a little better than others." Rand said that, despite progress, Ordonez's ankle shows swelling at times. The outfielder/designated hitter will travel to Los Angeles to see Dr. Phillip Kwong, the orthopedist who repaired his ankle fracture last August. Ordonez, 37, has hit .172 with one home run and five RBIs in 26 games this season. Dirks, meanwhile, was a terror during spring training in Lakeland and kept it up in Toledo. In 34 games with the Mud Hens, he has batted .328, smacked six home runs and drove in 20 runs. He also stole 10 bases. "He's been pretty good," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "He's had a couple games where he's struck out a little bit, but he's done a good job.""
