The Detroit Tigers announced this morning that left-handed pitcher Jose Alvarez will start tonight’s game against the Miami Marlins instead of Rick Porcello (7:10 p.m. FSD).

The Tigers plan to get in a lot of work for their bullpen tonight. Porcello could still pitch just not as the starter.

The Tigers likely will use a four-man starting rotation in the playoffs with Porcello moving to the bullpen.

Porcello (13-8) had a 1.66 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings over his last three starts. The 24-year-old needs one win to match his career high of 14 set as a rookie in 2009 and matched in 2011.

He went 13-8 as a starter this season with a 4.38 ERA and 139 strikeouts in 174 2/3 innings.

The Tigers won each of Porcello’s last three starts and five of his last six. Porcello got the win in four of his last six starts. He is 61-50 as a starter in five years.
