One took a step back the other a step forward.

But the step back could be a big one.

Tigers second baseman Omar Infante left early in his rehab game with the Single A West Michigan Whitecaps on Thursday night because of continued soreness in the left ankle that’s sidelined him since early July.

The plan was for him to play second base for the Whitecaps on Thursday after DHing Wednesday and possibly return to the Tigers on Friday. At the worst Infante thought he’d need one more rehab game for Triple A Toledo.

But his return date is completely up in the air now.

“I’m feeling a lot of pain in my ankle right now” Infante told MLive.com. “Real bad. Now when I’m walking I feel pain.”

Infante went on to say he thought maybe he tried to come back too soon after his shin and ankle were bashed by an arguably dirty takeout slide by the Blue Jays’ Colby Rasmus in Toronto July 3.
