By the time Tigers manager Jim Leyland left for the All-Star Game last Sunday, he suspected that Omar Infante wouldn’t be ready to play on Friday night.

It turns out he was right.

“I pretty much knew he wasn’t going to be ready,” Leyland said. “He’s not ready, and I have no idea when (he will be).”

Infante, the Tigers starting second baseman who’s been on the disabled list since July 4 with a sprained left ankle — the result of an over-aggressive slide into second by the Blue Jays’ Colby Rasmus — ran only at half-speed while working out this week in Lakeland, Fla.

Not only wasn’t he active for the resumption of the season against the Kansas City Royals, he wasn’t even with the team.

He’ll report back today for what trainer Kevin Rand called “evaluation.”

But to be able to play in a game, of course, Infante has to get back to full speed.
