Max Scherzer said he knew he was at his limit after seven innings. There was no way he was going to continue to pitch in the eighth inning so any fan outrage about Tigers manager Jim Leyland taking him out of the game is misguided.

The Tigers had a 5-1 lead when Scherzer left.

The bullpen imploded in the eighth inning. David Ortiz hit a game-tying grand slam and the Tigers went on to lose 6-5 on Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s RBI single in the ninth inning off Rick Porcello in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday night at Fenway Park.

“I just knew I was at my limit” said Scherzer who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before giving up a one-out single to Shane Victorino followed by an RBI double to Dustin Pedroia.
