Tigers manager Jim Leyland says retired Gary Sheffield had 'Hall of Fame' career

"Gary Sheffield, a member of the Tigers in 2007 and 2008, has retired at 42 after spending 2009 out of baseball and finding nothing to his liking this year.

Detroit manager Jim Leyland also managed Sheffield with the Florida Marlins, and they won a World Series together with that club in 1997.

Asked to sum up his career, Leyland said, "Well, it's Hall of Fame. It's pretty simple. We had a lot of great moments together, and celebrated the biggest prize of all together."

Sheffield ranks 24th with 509 home runs and 25th with 1,676 RBIs. He batted .292 with 2,689 hits.

"At one time," Leyland said, "he had the consensus fastest bat in the game.""
