The Detroit Tigers have promoted rookie reliever Bruce Rondon from Class AAA and placed reliever Octavio Dotel on the disabled list.

Rondon entered spring training as the heir apparent to the ninth-inning duties, but he was optioned to the minors after struggling mightily in Grapefruit League plan. In seven appearances this season at Class AAA, he struck out nine and walked two while not allowing an earned run in 7 2/3 innings.

Rondon likely won’t be used in save situations initially, as Joaquin Benoit is the team’s unofficial closer. Phil Coke and Al Alburquerque also are ninth inning options, and Jose Valverde eventually will be, too, once he works his way through the minors. Valverde saved 110 games for Detroit from 2010-2012 but wasn’t re-signed this past offseason. Earlier this month, however, the Tigers inked him to a minor league deal.

Dotel, bothered by an elbow injury, has posted a 13.50 ERA in six appearances this season.
