The season opens Thursday at Detroit and the Red Sox are looking for a closer, Andrew Bailey having suffered a thumb injury that is likely to land him on the disabled list.
Bailey will be in Boston Monday for an exam to determine the severity of the injury, the origins of which are unknown.
General manager Ben Cherington and manager Bobby Valentine would not go into specifics about the injury, Cherington saying the team needed to see the results of Bailey's MRI first.
"It's a thumb situation,'' Valentine said.
Bailey has not pitched since appearing in a minor league game last Wednesday. He was not available for comment Sunday.
