Rio Ferdinand has labelled Manchester United season as ‘embarrassing’ and revealed his shame at their title defence.

United are currently 17 points behind league leaders Chelsea and slumped to a 3-0 defeat to rivals Manchester City on Tuesday night.

David Moyes’ side look almost certain to miss out on next season’s Champions League – unless they beat champions Bayern Munich and go on and win the tournament.

And Ferdinand said he takes it personally when his side do badly.

He said: ‘It's embarrassing - it becomes a personal insult.

'I don't want to go out when the game is finished and you even stop watching TV. I don't want to take my kids to school.

'I don't want to walk on the school path and think I'm hearing things or seeing people look at me because we lost a game.
