"Unlike Romeo Crennel before him, Eric Mangini declined to name a starting quarterback while on the hot seat.
"That's the great thing about Mike Holmgren coming in," Mangini said when asked who his starter would be. "He knows a lot about quarterbacks and he'll give a lot of insight on that and I'll be excited to listen to his thoughts on it."
Crennel, of course, named Brady Quinn his starter last year before being fired. He was proven correct when Quinn won the job over Derek Anderson after a camp-long battle.
Despite taking heat all year for the open competition, Mangini said he wouldn't have done it differently.
"No, I wouldn't have," he said. "There were two players that both had really strong arguments to start. I wanted to set up a situation that was fair to both guys. I don't think there's anything wrong with creating an opportunity for two really good players to make their case to start at quarterback for this team. They both had strong cases and there's a new system, a lot of learning. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I think both of them grew, I think both of them learned, I think both of them had to play throughout the season, even when Brady got hurt at the end and D.A. came in."
Quinn finished 27th in the league with a 67.2 rating before being placed on injured reserve with a sprained foot Dec. 22. Mangini has said it hasn't yet been determined if Quinn will need surgery. Quinn is signed through 2011 and can make an extra $5.95 million in 2010 if he plays 70 percent of the snaps.
Anderson, who finished with a 42.1 rating, is signed through 2010 and is due a $2 million roster bonus this spring.
Holmgren update: A Browns spokesman said that although Holmgren was expected to arrive in town Monday evening, he was not believed to have gone to the Berea facility. The Browns have not yet scheduled Holmgren's introductory press conference.
Lucky number seven? By virtue of their 5-11 record, the Browns will have the seventh pick in the first round of the draft on April 27. The Browns tied with Seattle and Oakland at 5-11, but select between them because of their opponents' record (131-125). The Browns will rotate with Seattle and Oakland in subsequent rounds.
So what will the seventh pick get this year? According to early draft projections, some possibilities include Florida cornerback Joe Haden, Alabama inside linebacker Rolando McClain and Oklahoma State offensive tackle Russell Okung.
Edwards pick: Braylon Edwards didn't come close to catching the 55 passes for the Jets necessary to improve the third-round pick acquired in the trade to a second. Edwards caught 35 passes for 541 yards, an average of about three per game. The Jets, who made the playoffs, will be picking sometime after No. 21 in most rounds depending on how far they go in the playoffs. "
