Derreck Edwards will have a busy spring juggling Texas Tech spring football as well as track and field duties.

Edwards, a 6-foot-1, 165-pound rising junior wideout who caught five catches for 88 yards last season, will be with the Red Raider track and field team this weekend for Texas A&M’s Triangular indoor meet between the Aggies, LSU and Texas Tech. He will compete in the triple jump.

There’s not a more hotly contested position on the Red Raider football team than X receiver though, so Edwards is expected to return to the football team for spring ball tentatively set for March and April and then return to the track team to finish out its season.

The junior will be competing against senior-to-be Shawn Corker and sophomore-to-be D.J. Polite-Bray in a competition to replace Eric Ward.

If Edwards records a jump at any time that stands as a top 16 jump nationally across all meets in Division I during the NCAA indoor season, he will be invited to Indoor National Championship mid-March in Albuquerque, N.M.

Edwards will likely return to the track team late in the outdoor season after spring football.
