"The Texas Rangers are actively trying to add the last missing piece to their club before the Saturday non-waiver trade deadline, but the uncertainty of their finances is making a trade difficult to complete.
Sources indicated that the Rangers have honed in on Florida third baseman Jorge Cantu but continue to show interest in a handful of other right-handed-hitting corner infielders.
Some would come cheaper than others, but they would all add to a budget that was already stretched thin and has since been manipulated to help cover the trade for Cliff Lee and incentives to be paid to him and Bengie Molina.
Not all of the money in the budget has been spent, a source said, but a trade seems unlikely without some help -- either from a partner who is willing to take on money, with more aid from MLB or from the U.S. bankruptcy court.
The Rangers are examining their options as they search for a platoon partner for first baseman Chris Davis.
"We're open to improving the club. Let's just leave it at that," general manager Jon Daniels said Sunday. "It's going to have to be a clear improvement. We're not just looking to shuffle the deck. We like our club."
Cantu is the Marlins' starting third baseman but has played first base this season and throughout his career. He is hitting .260 with 10 homers and 54 RBIs in a pitcher-friendly ballpark."
