Although virtually everyone else who has weighed in on the subject believes the Texans should use the No. 1 draft pick, if they are in position to do so, on a quarterback, specifically quarterback Teddy Bridgewater from Louisville.

Mel Kiper Jr., one of ESPN’s draft experts, disagrees. He said on a web chat Tuesday the Texans should take either UCLA outside linebacker Anthony Barr or South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.

He qualified that by saying the Texans’ pick would depend on the new coach and his system.

He didn’t express a preference between Barr and Clowney but acknowledged Clowney’s stock might have fallen because of the speeding ticket last Saturday for driving 110 mph in a 70 mph zone.

“Doesn’t help,” Kiper said. “He’s in a battle to be the No. 1 pick and at that level it does matter.”
