"Call it a buzzer-beater by the NBA.
After months of negotiating and the threat of litigation, the league and its players reached a surprise agreement early Saturday morning that ended the 149-day lockout and salvaged the 2011-12 season.
A tentative deal is in place for the league to begin a 66-game regular season on Christmas Day.
The Grizzlies, who captivated the Mid-South with last season's playoff run that lasted until Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals, now have a month to work through a training camp, free-agent period and the process of schmoozing fans before the season officially begins.
"I want to encourage every Memphian and every Grizzlies fan to get behind our team and support them during this abbreviated season," Memphis Mayor AC Wharton said in a statement. "Last year was magical; this year can be as well. Congratulations are extended to (owner) Michael Heisley, all of our great players, coach (Lionel) Hollins, and the entire organization. As fans and as a community, we are here for you."
It is unlikely that the Griz will play on Christmas Day as the league normally reserves its first network television exposure for large-market, marquee teams. The soonest the Griz are expected to play is Dec. 26.
Scheduling, though, won't be paramount to Heisley, Hollins and general manager Chris Wallace. The Grizzlies' first and major priority will be to re-sign restricted free agent Marc Gasol -- arguably the best center in franchise history."
