Tennessee Titans want Randy Moss comfortable with offense

"Mike Heimerdinger was sitting in his office, minding his own business during the Titans' bye week, when his boss ducked in and said:

"We're going to get him."

With that, Jeff Fisher informed his offensive coordinator that Christmas had come early. Twenty-two teams had passed on Randy Moss, essentially dropping him in the Titans' laps - for better or worse.

Heimerdinger certainly thinks it's for better. Yes, Moss brings some baggage to town. But the instant he sat foot on the Titans' practice field, he became the best wide receiver on the team. And even at age 33 and after 12-plus NFL seasons, he is the best deep threat in franchise history.

This is a kid/candy store situation for Heimerdinger. He said he never expected Moss to land with the Titans. Now it's up to him to put Moss in position to make an impact as soon as possible.

"My main thing is to find out what he likes to do, what he can do and how fast we can get him up on the offense," Heimerdinger said. "That's really what we do with anybody. I've got a good feel for what different guys do best and get them in situations where they can be successful."

It's a crash course. While Fisher said Moss "can still run all the routes on the route tree," he must learn new terminology for formations and pass routes while picking up the Titans' audible system.

"He's pretty smart. Plus, it's not nuclear physics," Heimerdinger said. "It's more a matter of interpreting things from system to system. He told me, 'There's nothing I can't do,' but I told him we'd talk at the end of the week and see what he's comfortable with.

"If there's something he doesn't understand or he's not comfortable with, I'll get a different personnel group out there.""
