"In five seasons with the Titans, Vince Young thrilled fans and offered hope for even brighter days with playoff wins and perhaps a return to the Super Bowl.
At the same time, however, Young frustrated coaches and teammates. Questions about his work ethic and commitment were incessant, and more drama off the field kept the quarterback's career from really soaring.
On Wednesday the Titans ran out of patience. They announced plans to move on without Young, and begin the process of finding their next quarterback. While indications are the decision means Coach Jeff Fisher will be back, owner Bud Adams isn't ready to commit to that just yet.
Young said he's sorry things didn't work out, and thanked the Titans for giving him a chance. Yet he also said he never felt like Fisher trusted him, and that was a constant source of frustration that finally boiled over in a locker room showdown with the coach after a game in November.
"Things happen for a reason. I tried my best to win a Super Bowl for them. I tried my hardest, I really did,'' Young said. "I just wish Coach Fisher would have trusted me a little bit more. That was the only issue there.
"I like Jeff Fisher as a person, as a coach and everything. I just didn't feel like he trusted me. In the five years I was there … I feel like he was continuing to treat me like I was a young man when I'd really grown up a whole lot. I just didn't feel like I had the trust and the love that any other quarterback around the league had. I was always looking over my shoulder. I didn't feel like I was his guy the whole way.''
Attempts to reach Fisher for comment Wednesday night were unsuccessful.
The third overall pick in the 2006 draft, Young was scheduled to make $8.5 million in the final year of his contract, along with a $4.25 million bonus. While the Titans will attempt to trade him, chances are Young ultimately will be released.
"We have been engaged in a series of internal discussions over the last month about the future of our football team," Adams said in a statement. "We have two critical decisions to make — the direction of the coaching staff and the future at the quarterback position. They are separate issues to me and will be dealt with separately. …
"Vince will not be on our roster next season. I want to offer my personal thanks to Vince for all of his positive contributions to the club. These kinds of decisions are never easy and this is especially true for this particular player. I certainly wish that things would have worked out better, but I think it is best for the franchise that we move on at this point.
"I also informed Jeff today that I was continuing the evaluation of the coaching staff and I am hoping to make a decision soon."
Yet the decision to part ways with Young, whose rift with Fisher contributed to a separation in the locker room and a dreadful 6-10 season, would appear to be a good sign for the coach, whose contract runs through 2011.
Young posted a 30-18 record as a starter, including one playoff game. Yet injuries and controversies plagued the career of the player Adams handpicked after he guided the University of Texas to a national championship."
