Tampa Bay Rays reliever Jason Isringhausen heads to disabled list after injuring elbow

"RHP Jason Isringhausen was placed on the disabled list Saturday night due to an elbow injury suffered in the ninth inning against the Nationals. The severity was unknown.

It didn't look good when Isringhausen, 36, sailed a pitch left of C Michel Hernandez with two outs and then waved toward the dugout for assistance. Isringhausen, who rehabbed all spring after elbow surgery ended his season last year with the Cardinals, quickly left the field with a trainer and was replaced by RHP Lance Cormier.

Manager Joe Maddon said Isringhausen felt something in his elbow and will be examined. Isringhausen was unavailable for comment. "There's concern," Maddon said. "I don't know what level, but there's concern."

RHP Winston Abreu's contract was selected from Triple-A Durham. Abreu, 32, had 10 saves and a 1.41 ERA, striking out 49 and walking 10 in 32 innings.

"You feel bad for the guy, and hope it's not that bad," LH reliever Randy Choate said. "But when you pull yourself out of a game, obviously you know it's not good."

STRONG SHIELDS: Utilityman Ben Zobrist has said if RHP James Shields had the run support he deserved this season, he would be an All-Star.

Though Shields (5-5, 3.36) said he has had his "best stuff" only a few times this season, he has been solid. But the Rays have lost eight of his 13 starts, partly because they've scored 3.97 runs per nine innings for him, fourth-lowest in the AL. "I'm pleased with the way I've felt, keeping the team in the game," Shields said. "It's one of those things where you sometimes don't pitch on the right day.""
