"No offense, Memphis, but the Suns can have trouble scoring and still win.
Stinging from the 38-point beatdown they received on the previous night in Portland, the Suns bit back to beat Memphis 86-84 Saturday night at US Airways Center despite shooting only 36.4 percent from the field.
The Suns have not shot worse in a victory since Jan. 23, 2009, when they shot 36.0 percent and still won by 22 at Charlotte.
"We had to gut it out at the end, but after last night's embarrassment, we played with a lot of heart and found a way," guard Steve Nash said in his 700th game with the Suns. "We did a good job defensively and hung on offensively."
This one was not so close. The Suns led the game by as many as 16 points but wound up clinging to victory without ever losing the lead down the stretch. Phoenix led for 41 consecutive minutes, but Memphis tied the game twice in the final 82 seconds, only to have guard Jared Dudley draw fouls twice and convert all four free throws.
Dudley's final two free throws came courtesy of questionable call against Mike Conley Jr. while Dudley was dribbling away from the basket. That gave the Suns an 86-84 lead with 3.3 seconds to go, leaving Memphis a shot to tie or win."
