Gus Poyet is ready to make a raid on former club Brighton with a £2 million bid for Liam Bridcutt.

Poyet, the Sunderland manager, will table an offer for the midfielder when the transfer window opens next week as he prepares to shake up his squad.

Bridcutt, 24, was signed by Poyet from Chelsea in 2010 and has established a reputation as one of the most highly-rated playmakers outside the Premier League.

Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest attempted to sign the Scotland international in the summer but Poyet is set to test the resolve of his old club with a bid next month.

Poyet is certain to face opposition from Brighton following his acrimonious exit from the Championship club in June for alleged gross misconduct.
