Street's streak ends as Rockies fall to Diamondbacks in 11 innings

"Huston Street sat in the dugout Thursday night in disbelief. He no longer was perfect. The streak was over.

Long live the pain.

There's nothing worse in baseball than blowing a save. Imagine going to a restaurant, enjoying a tasty appetizer, a delicious dinner and a fine bottle of wine, then having the waiter take 30 minutes to bring the check.

"It ruins the entire experience. It ruins it for the fans and the players," Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said recently. "It's all anyone remembers."

For eight innings, the Rockies mauled the Diamondbacks. It took Street only 18 pitches to untie the knot. He allowed ninth-inning home runs to Gerardo Parra and Chris Young, setting the stage for Justin Upton's walkoff single in the Diamondbacks' 3-2, 11-inning victory at Chase Field.

With one out, Young lined a double off the center-field overhang off Matt Belisle, just missing consecutive home runs. Upton flared a ball to right field that a sliding Seth Smith couldn't corral, the final exclamation point in three forgettable innings.

The Rockies' execution was flawed leading to Upton's bloop. Even after Street's first blown save in 12 attempts, Colorado had a ripe opportunity to slither away with a victory. The first two hitters reached in the 11th. But in order, Todd Helton popped up and Smith and Ian Stewart struck out.

Street lives dangerously, affectionately dubbed "Heart Attack" Huston by a gaggle of fingernail-less fans. Yet, he was 11-for-11 in save opportunities when he entered to preserve Jason Hammel's latest gem."
